About the Board

A Board of Education is the legal entity for conducting a system of public education within the geographic area of a school district. The system was created by, and is governed by state statutes. Members of the Board are state officers elected by the citizens of a district to represent them and the state in the legislative management of public schools.

The Board of Education of the Carlisle Local School District has the dual responsibility for implementing statutory requirements pertaining to public education and the local citizens' desire for educating the community's youth. While the Board has an obligation to determine and assess citizens' desires, it is understood that when citizens elect delegates to represent them in the conduct of public eduction they, at the same time, endow their representatives with the authority to exercise their best judgment in determining policies, making decisions, and approving procedures for carrying out the responsibility.

The Board of Education of the Carlisle Local School District is composed of five members, elected by citizens of the district. A regular term is four years.

The Board of Education of the Carlisle Local School District is responsible to the community, for whose benefit the school district has been established. Furthermore, the Board's current decisions will influence the course of education in the district's schools for years to come. By virtue of this responsibility, the Board and  each of its members must look to the future and the the needs of all people more than the average citizen finds necessary. This requires a comprehensive perspective  and long range planning in addition to the attention to immediate problems.

The Board's primary responsibility is to establish those programs and procedures which will best produce the educational achievement needed by the district's students. It is charged with accomplishing this while also being responsible for wise management of resources available to the district. The Board must fulfill these responsibilities by functioning primarily as a legislative body to formulate and adopt policy, by hiring a Superintendent and Treasurer to implement policy, and by evaluating the results of those policies. It must also carry out its functions openly, while seeking the involvement and contributions of the staff, students and the community in its decision making process.
